Steeped in History
The Woods of Parley's Lane is as rich in history as it is in beauty. Spanning back to the mid-1800s, Parley's Park - near where The Woods is located today - was the first area to be settled in Summit County. By the 1870s mining was a booming business. Silver, coal and other commoditites were being pulled from the surrounding mountains. Thus, the small mining town of Park City was born.
In 1890 the Utah Eastern Railway built a line that connected Salt Lake City to Park City through Parley's Canyon and the land that his now The Woods of Parley's Lane. The line was completed just before the company was reorganized as the Utah Central Railway. As more silver was discovered in the Park City mountains, train companies such as Utah Central, Union Pacific, Rio Grande and Summit County Railway competed with each other to move commodities back and forth from Park City to the Salt Lake Valley through Parley's Lane.
Trains no longer steam through The Woods of Parley's Lane. Their tracks have been replaced by hiking and biking trails. But if you listen with a little imagination, you might hear those old locomotives moving along the rails through these beautiful woods as they did many years ago.
